Performance driven teams work towards a common goal and strive to encourage each other to reach that goals. For example, our blood culture contamination rates were too high so our management team gave us a goal to lower the rate below a certain percentage rate. We were encouraged to lower the rate to receive a higher bonus. Extrinsic motivation was displayed with this by rewarding staff with a bonus or increase in pay so we would be motivated to achieve the goal. The amount of money that was saved by lowering the contamination rate escalated the money spent to motivate staff to obtain blood cultures with lower contamination rates. The team worked together to achieve a goal with the use of extrinsic motivation.
