Expectations / Tasks
Task 1 – Mission Statement & Marketing:
Your first task will be to create a mission statement for your fitness facility. Based on this mission
statement, you will need to discuss your marketing campaign which will target your niche market(s). You
will need to identify which user groups are most likely to utilize your facility and explain why. You may
also want offer incentives or advertise specialty programs for your members.
• How will you tell the public about your gym?
• What are you offering? Why should members come to your fitness facility versus the other
facilities in your community?
• Will there be any sign-up promotions, refer-a-friend offers, monthly promotions? Indicate all of
these types of marketing strategies in this section.
Task 2 – Floor Plan:
Your second task is to design a floor plan of the layout of your facility. You can be creative as to what
varieties of recreation types your facility supports, but ensure you cover all of the necessary aspects for
your particular niche. It is suggested to either draw then attach the drawing of your floor plan or use a
program of your choice to design and export the floor plan into your word document (i.e. PowerPoint). In
2
addition, you will need to describe the location and the reason as to why amenities are available
throughout your facility. Ensure that your floor plan is well labelled and easy to interpret. Some amenities
to consider include:
• Front desk
• Daycare
• Lounge area
• Staff rooms
• Offices
• Assessment / Testing rooms
• Cardio area
• Free weights area
• Resistance machines
• Stretching area
• Personal training area
• Group fitness studio
• Spinning studio
• Track
• Swimming pool
• Sports-related field / court
Task 3 – Programs:
Your third task is to plan and schedule all of the programs you will be running at your facility. Ensure to
keep in mind your niche when developing this schedule. You will need to schedule programs for the spaces
you have during your hours of operation. You may want to include the schedule in a well-organized chart
format, assuming that this chart will be posted outside of a group fitness studio and / or other areas in
your facility.
You may find it helpful to use the Oshawa Leisure Guide or the YMCA scheduling as a reference for your
programming. Please do not copy any program schedule as that is considered plagiarism. Instead, create
your own classes and program schedule and use the flow of the YMCA scheduling as a reference.
Remember, classes are not always full. As such, you will need to think of when the gyms are most busy.
Task 4 – Insurance:
Your fourth task will be to discuss and justify your insurance coverages. Which of the insurance coverages
discussed in lecture are required for your facility and why? Which of the insurance coverages are
supplemental that you have decided to select and why?
Task 5 – Staff:
Your fifth task will be to plan for the staff you will need to run your programs. You will need to submit an
outline of all the positions to be filled for your facility and a brief job description for each position.
• Indicate the qualities you will need from each hire. You may need to refer back to your mission
statement and / or your niche (Hint: lecture content and textbooks are good resources here).
• What are the hours of operation? Will these staff members be hired as part-time or full-time?
• How will you maintain the cleanliness of your facility? Should you hire a cleaner? What type of
contract will you offer these individuals?
• Description of the job (job title, roles, responsibilities, etc.)
• Which job tasks will your volunteers need to complete?
• What will you be paying your workers (Hint: you will have to do some research for this topic)?
Task 6 – Budget:
Your sixth and final task will be to demonstrate a breakdown of your budget for both one-time and
recurring costs. This should include a screenshot of the Gym Calculator posted on DC Connect. In addition,
you will need to indicate how many pieces of each equipment you will need for your facility (i.e. treadmills,
benches, etc.) as well as the cost of insurance coverages, amongst other factors that need to be discussed.
You will need to refer to lecture material and / or research this information further.
3
Part II: Presentation
Consider presenting to an audience of investors who are interested in financially helping you with your
fitness facility. The purpose of your presentation is to show us your creativity and hard work; tell us about
your facility in an engaging manner! Make sure to break down and simplify each task category and the
justification of the choices you have made for your facility. Why should the investors select your fitness
facility amongst other facilities in the community?
Hint: think of the level of enthusiasm you may encounter in a fitness-related pitch on Shark Tank or
Dragon’s Den.
Format
• 18-20 minutes
